Scientists have discovered 15 new extraterrestrial signals

Scouring the skies for alien technology has turned up strange radio bursts

Fast radio bursts, or FRBs, are brief, bright pulses of radio emission from distant galaxies.

At the time, it was the first FRB to be discovered; and by 2015, it became the first FRB to be seen repeating. Gajjar says that the repeating nature and current state of heightened activity for FRB 121102 does seem to rule out some of the most destructive explanations, such as colliding black holes.

Breakthrough Listen is a global astronomical initiative launched in 2015 by Internet investor and philanthropist Yuri Milner and cosmologist Stephen Hawking. The signals were so strong that the Breakthrough Listen team sent out an astronomer's telegram urging the scientific community to check it out, saying "these observations may indicate FRB 121102 is now in a heightened activity state, and follow-on observations are encouraged".

"Whether or not fast radio bursts turn out to be signatures of extra-terrestrial technology, Breakthrough Listen is helping to push the frontiers of a new and rapidly growing area of our understanding of the universe around us", Siemion said.

On Saturday, UC Berkeley postdoctoral researcher Dr.Vishal Gajjar used the Breakthrough Listen backed instrument at the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia to Target FRB 121102 again which was observed in 2012.

Researchers at the Breakthrough Listen lab at the University of California Berkeley recently recorded 15 FRBs from FRB 121102 - the same FRB from previous year. The Green Bank Telescope allowed the team to observe the radio burst over a larger range of frequencies than previous telescopes, and the astronomers found the signal was stronger than they expected at higher frequencies. FRBs were first discovered about 15 years ago, and in the years since they've been detected a couple dozen times.

Scholz said that there could be reasons such as the signal being distorted between its source galaxy and Earth. "The instrument accumulated 400 TB of data on the object over a five hour observation, observing the entire 4 to 8 GHz frequency band", the statement said. "Previously, we thought there wasn't much emission at high or low frequencies, but now it looks like there is", Harvard University theoretical physicist Avi Loeb told New Scientist. That's unusual in of itself; FRBs tend to pop once, and that's it, at least in the ten years we've been hunting them.

Astronomers have detected repeated radio signals from a mysterious source in a dwarf galaxy 3 billion light-years away.

Another doubts stems over the ambiguity prevailing over the source of FRBs - whether they were dispatched by natural organic processes, or an intelligent alien life.

It added: "Life on Earth consisted of only single-celled organisms, and it would be another billion years before even the simplest multi-cellular life began to evolve".

This is speculative work though and in the search for alien life, all other possibilities must be excluded first.
