Huge potential for cooperation with India: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi

Huge potential for cooperation with India Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi

Days after resolving an over two-month-long military stand-off with India, China on Thursday said it will step up patrolling in Doklam where the two armies were locked in a face-off over a strategic border road.

A three-day summit of the BRICS grouping of nations, which also includes Brazil, Russia, and South Africa, starts in Chinese city of Xiamen on Sunday. India had deployed about 350 personnel in the area as the road would give China greater access to India's strategically vulnerable Siliguri corridor that links the seven north-eastern states to the Indian mainland.

"The Chinese military will continue to carry out its mission and responsibilities, strengthen its patrols and garrisons in the Donglang area and resolutely safeguard national sovereignty and security", Defence Ministry spokesman Ren Guoqing said. "We have long built infrastructure construction and including building of roads".

China has tried to highlight the Indian troops withdrawal while remaining silent about the fate of the road which was the primary objection for India.

"On your question about China providing loans to India to withdraw troops, we have checked with the relevant authorities of the government and such reports are pure fabrication", he said. However, Beijing reiterated that it will "adjust deployments" on the remote and mountainous Doklam Plateau that is disputed territory for China and Bhutan.

Khosrowshahi has headed up Expedia since 2005, after serving as the chief financial officer of IAC for seven years. Uber's crises have failed to knock the company's business off course, with revenues surging in the second quarter.

He also put up a lengthy defence about how Chinese military handled the standoff - regarded as the worst between the two countries since the 1962 war.

But, Chinese official agencies and media seem to be keeping up the speculation on the issue alive by repeated denials because it serves the goal of showing that China is financially much stonger than India, which makes it a hard competitor in a military contest, said an observer.

Despite the recent differences, the two sides will continue to make efforts to enhance military to military exchanges to "avoid misjudgement and misunderstanding", Ren said.

India's foreign ministry on Monday announced an "expeditious disengagement" of troops from Doklam after agreement was reached between the two sides.
