Olympian David Torrence Dies at 31

David Torrence, an Olympic middle-distance runner, has died after being pulled from a swimming pool at a condominium complex, Police in Arizona say. He was born in Japan but grew up in Los Angeles.

Torrence was from California and had come to Scottsdale to train a few weeks ago.

Gabriele Grunewald, the former national indoor champion in the 3,000-meter who represented the U.S.at the 2014 world indoor championships, tweeted, "I am absolutely broken hearing about David Torrence". After that he switched allegiances to Peru - his mother's country - and reached the Olympic final of the 5,000 metres in Rio a year ago. The runner trained in multiple training groups.

Torrence participated in an anti-doping investigation into a coach who was arrested last summer. Emergency services claimed that there were no suspicious circumstances.
