US Black Hawk helicopter crashes off Yemen's coast

A U.S. military helicopter crashed during a training exercise off the coast of Yemen Friday, U.S. Central Command reported Saturday.

US forces rescued the five other service members who were on board.

Officials have not provided information on the identities of those on board or the unit to which the aircraft belongs, saying only that the incident occurred around 7 p.m. local time about 20 miles off Yemen's southern coast. Washington Post quoted U.S. Central Command statement.

US forces have conducted scores of airstrikes in Yemen and carried out occasional ground raids since January 29, when a Navy SEAL - Chief Petty Officer William "Ryan" Owens, 36, of Peoria, Ill. - was killed in the first military operation authorized by President Donald Trump.

In the last accident in Yemen, an Osprey helicopter had to be destroyed, after it made a hard landing during a special a Special Forces raid on a mountain hideout. Children were also among the casualties. Special Forces troops has been on the ground in the midst of Yemen's civil war in support of an operation against the Al Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) terror group.

For more than two years, Yemen's Saudi-backed government forces-with USA support and munitions-have been pitted against Iranian-backed Houthi rebels, leading to a devastating humanitarian crisis. The U.S. was also providing midair refueling and overhead reconnaissance support.

Five U.S. service members onboard the aircraft were rescued after the crash and one remains missing.

The cause of the Black Hawk helicopter's crash is unknown. The Marine Corps announced Friday it had recovered the bodies of three Marines killed in that crash.
