West Bengal: Floods in control but toll rises to 55

With more than 200 deaths and 1.5 crore people in 18 Bihar districts affected by the flood in the last one week the government has roped in Army personnel too for carrying out relief and rescue operations. PTI file

Meanwhile, four more persons lost their lives in Assam and almost 19 lakh people were suffering in 15 districts of the state.

Floods continued to wreak havoc in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Assam which reported 88 more deluge-related deaths on Sunday, while West Bengal heaved a sigh of relief in the absence of major rainfall.

In neighbouring Uttarakhand, 17 people were killed and more than 30 including soldiers were missing in floods, domestic media reported.

Saharsa and Khagaria were the latest districts to be affected during the day, Special Secretary in the Disaster Management Department, Anirudh Kumar, said. Over 4.64 lakh people have been displaced from the flood-hit areas and taken to a safer place while the 1,289 relief camps opened in numerous flood-hit areas are providing shelter and food to around 3.92 lakh people.

The state government is also running 2569 community kitchens, which feed around five lakh affected people daily.

"Telecommunication network in the entire section is badly affected also", he said. At least 153 people have so far died in the state as swirling floodwaters submerged hundreds of villages and swept away homes. NDRF teams also distributed 6400 water bottles, 6200 food packets and 2237 persons were provided medical assistance. The flood situation remains grim in 15 districts, affecting millions.

The flood has damaged embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructures in Kokrajhar, Jorhat, Biswanath, Udalguri, Barpeta, Nagaon, Golaghat, Majuli, Dibrugarh, Bongaigaon and Kamrup.

The Brahmaputra river continues to flow above the danger mark in Jorhat, Sonitpur, Guwahati, Goalpara and Dhubri.

Vast forest areas in the Kaziranga National Park, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary and Lawkhua wildlife sanctuary are under the flood waters. The toll in the third wave of floods in the state has risen to 49.

A total of 1,152 personnel from 28 National Disaster Response Force teams are performing their work of providing services with the help of 118 boats.

Fifty "ambulatory vans" are working in flood-hit areas to attend to sick animals and 196 veterinary doctors have been deputed. Where flood waters have receded, they are being supplied through panchayats. Available on Android and IOS.
