SEA Games 2017 officially opens in Kuala Lumpur

To be aired on Singtel TV and social media channels during the SEA Games from 19 August through 30 August, the "Power On" video series will also feature each of the athletes in six 60-second videos in which they talk about their motivations and vulnerabilities representing Singapore at the regional meet.

The 11 participating countries are: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam.

The nearly 500-strong contingent of Filipino athletes was the second country to enter the stadium, donning a blue top and white trousers.

Khairy Jamaluddin, Malaysia's youth and sports minister, stressed before the jampacked crowd the importance of the SEA Games in today's generation, saying its role is to develop sports heroes.

Among the Pinoy campaigners to watch is two-time SEA Games silver medalist Harlene Raguin, who narrowly missed bagging the gold in the women's epee battle in the previous SEA Games in Singapore. In an interview, chef de mission Cynthia Carrion said the Philippine Olympic Committee is eyeing at least 50 golds.

The cauldron is lit up, marking the official start of the 12-day Games.

It's the sixth time for the Malaysian capital city of Kuala Lumpur to host the biennial event after 1965, 1971, 1977, 1989 and 2011. We now have Olympics and world champions.
