Another Senator Discovers He's A Dual Citizen

John Darley Nick Xenophon rules his party like a

South Australian senator Nick Xenophon, says he is now checking whether he may be a British citizen due to his father's nationality.

Yesterday, Senator Xenophon told reporters he had sought advice from the British Home Office and United Kingdom high commission whether he had any United Kingdom ties.

It comes after Deputy Nationals Leader Fiona Nash revealed on Friday she was a United Kingdom citizen by descent.

Xenophon's father was born in Cyprus when it was a colony of Britain.

He is now seeking clarification from the UK High Commission. "I'm doing all I can to clarify it and sort it out", Senator Xenophon told reporters in Adelaide.

Last night in the senate, Nationals deputy leader Fiona Nash revealed she was a dual British-Australian citizen because of her Scottish-born father.

Xenophon renounced the Greek citizenship he had from his mother's side and only discovered the possibility that he may have British citizenship when a journalist contacted him about the issue.

Australia's widening citizenship crisis entangled a seventh politician Friday, a key independent senator whose support is critical for Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to pass legislation through a hostile Senate.

While the government does not now need the support of crossbenchers in the lower house to hold office, should the court rule Deputy Prime Minister Joyce ineligible, it could only survive with the support of at least one non-government MP.

But Mr Joyce and Senator Nash have both declared they will stay in Cabinet because they are confident the High Court will find they are eligible to sit in Parliament.
