However, the state health minister has admitted that there was shortage of oxygen supply on August 10 between 1130 hrs to 1330 hrs to the children who were on artificial respiratory system.

According to data procured from Gorakhpur's Baba Raghav Das Medical College Hospital, in five days - from August 7 to August 11, a total of 60 children died in the hospital allegedly due to the unavailability of liquid oxygen cylinders. A high-level judicial inquiry must be initiated.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who visited the hospital this morning along with Union health minister JP Nadda, has said it would be a "heinous act" if the deaths were caused by a disruption in the supply of oxygen.

Praveen Modi, owner of Pushpa Sales company, which used to supply oxygen to the BRD Medical College, categorically denied that it had the tender to do so.

After the contract ended, it was given to a new firm from Allahabad - Imperial Gas - after the BJP government came to power this year.

The newspaper said doctors made frantic calls to the supplier to restore the oxygen supply as the children started dying, but the limited supplies quickly depleted. "I did so on humanitarian grounds", he said. "Dues exist, but we were not supplying the hospital since March", he said.
