Zuma survives no-confidence vote

South Africa's rand is rallying ahead of a no-confidence vote on President Jacob Zuma

If the no-confidence motion against South African President Jacob Zuma succeeds today in parliament, Zuma must resign immediately and the parliament speaker will become acting president. However, as he has been accused of almost 800 charges of corruption, his tenure as president has become uncertain.

A court a year ago found him guilty of violating the constitution after he refused to repay taxpayers' money used to refurbish his private rural house.

Both Mr. Zuma and the Gupta family deny wrongdoing. "It is their own imagination", an euphoric Zuma told a cheering crowd outside parliament in Cape Town after the result was announced.

At least 50 out of the ANC's 249 MPs would need to vote against the president in order for the no-confidence motion to pass.

Allegations of corruption have troubled the Zuma government in recent years. In November 2016 Zuma survived the no confidence vote with the majority 214.

The official report shows that of 384 lawmakers attending the session, 177 favored Zuma's exit from office, 198 were against and nine abstained.

South Africa's president Jacob Zuma narrowly survived another vote of no confidence on Tuesday. About 30 ANC MPs voted with the opposition during a secret ballot.

South Africa's economy has suffered lately, with rising unemployment resulting in increased public dissatisfaction at the current state of affairs in the country.

Divisions between MPs and the party executive "could lead to instability and even open warfare", he said. While his ANC party members are expected to rally support for him.

Trump Takes Aim at Blumenthal on Twitter Over Comments on Russia Investigation
Trump, like Blumenthal, also received five military deferments during the Vietnam War for bone spurs and never saw any combat. Some even claimed the misleading statements he made were taken out of context.

United Democratic Movement (UDM) leader Bantu Holomisa, who went to the Constitutional Court in a bid to force a secret ballot, said the opposition would ratchet up pressure on the president despite losing the day.

The ANC argued that the motion was against the party and not Zuma.

Ramaphosa's main rival Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Zuma's former wife, would not be eligible as she is not a lawmaker at present.

Many are hopeful that this could be a vote for change with the leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) party, Mmusi Maimane, saying, "I plead with you let us put the people of South Africa first and vote to remove Jacob Zuma today".

The motion for an early election will be tabled in Parliament tomorrow "and we will ensure it is debated and voted on as soon as practically possible", Maimane said. It is impossible: they can not.

"We are sure that the ANC has lost the confidence of the majority of South Africans".

He had particularly upset investors by removing finance minister Pravin Gordhan in March, which hit the country's credit rating.

But the ANC parliamentary party did not address these criticisms in a statement following the vote, which it called a "soft coup".
