Sara Errani faces two-month ban after failing drugs test

Sara Errani reportedly holding press conference after failed drugs test

The Italian WTA Tour veteran reached her only Grand Slam final at the 2012 French Open.

The 30-year-old tested positive for the banned drug letrozole, a drug which is associated with female body builders as it can increase body mass.

Italian tennis player Sara Errani has blamed her mother's breast cancer medication for a doping violation that will see her suspended from the sport for two months. There is no evidence it would enhance the performance of an elite tennis player. This also implies that all her results from the date of her positive out-of-competition test on 16 February until a negative test on 7 June have been annulled and all ranking points and prize money accrued in this period have had to be forfeited.

The former world number five will be out of action for the next two months meaning she will be out of the US Open at Flushing Meadows later this month. "I had not done anything wrong", Errani said.

Errani blamed contamination from her mother's breast cancer medication.

The tribunal accepted this was the most likely outcome, but rejected Errani's plea of no fault or negligence.

In evidence from Mrs Errani, which the Tribunal found "entirely truthful" she says she believed one of her tablets from a blister pack kept near the kitchen worktop, had accidentally fallen and contaminated some soup and tortellini she was preparing.

The ban will be effective August 3 and comes months after she initially accepted the violation in April, but was given an opportunity to present evidence to a panel.

Errani was charged with an Anti-Doping Rule Violation under Article 2.1 of the Program (presence of a Prohibited Substance in a Player's Sample).

Following their daughter's failed test her parents even carried out their own experiment to discover whether a tablet could have dissolved into broth, and found that it did. "The only hypothesis is food contamination". Contamination was possible because there had been times when pills had been dropped or spilled.

In a statement released via her official Twitter account, Errani strenuously denied knowingly taking a banned substance.
