Rex Tillerson says Russia's election interference has 'created serious mistrust'

Rex Tillerson

The U.S. sanctions bill and Russia's retaliation appear to have worsened already poor bilateral relations, but Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Monday that Moscow still sees room for engagement on several issues of mutual concern, reports the Associated Press.

But instead, Tillerson said, he tried to "help" Lavrov and the Russian delegation "understand just how serious this incident had been and how seriously it had damaged the relationship" during their meeting Sunday - their first face-to-face after the latest tensions and their fifth to-date.

After Trump signed the sanctions bill, Moscow announced it was forcing the USA government to cut American embassy and consulate staff (many of whom are local Russian hires) by 755 by September 1, as well as shutter two us diplomatic properties. A few days back, United States President Donald Trump had said that his country's relationship with Russian Federation is at all time "dangerously low".

The top United States diplomat told his Russian counterpart that Moscow's alleged meddling in United States election has seriously damaged the relationship between the two countries.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has said that they are ready to normalise talks only if the USA gives up the confrontational line.

Man brandishing knife arrested at Eiffel Tower

"I told the foreign minister we had not made a decision regarding how we will respond to Russia's request to remove United States diplomatic personnel", Mr Tillerson said, adding that he would respond to the matter by 1 September and that the U.S. and Russian Federation should find ways to cooperate. She says they discussed North Korea and Tillerson's trip to the Philippines for a regional Asia gathering. A U.S. Justice Department investigation is moving ahead into Russia's election interference and potential Trump campaign collusion.

In addition, the USA official revealed that he had warned Lavrov that Washington was deciding on a response to the Kremlin's decision to order a cut in the size of the U.S. mission in Moscow.

A cease-fire brokered by the USA and Russian Federation in southwest Syria has shown how the countries could work together. We hope that our contacts with the United States will continue also in relation to other aspects, both military and political, of the Syrian settlement. Discussions are also continuing on expanding the U.S.

Human rights groups have questioned the Trump administration's willingness to engage with Duterte.

"Naturally, such actions, including the illegal retention of our diplomatic property since December of a year ago, could not remain unanswered, and won't be in the future". Russian Federation will respond accordingly in the future. "At the same time, we are ready to normalize the dialogue, if Washington gives up the confrontational line", he added. Despite the striking back initiatives, Russian Federation keeps the positive tone in the relations with the United States. "Other current global matters, including the internal conflict in Ukraine, were also discussed", the Ministry wrote.
