Trump Takes Aim at Blumenthal on Twitter Over Comments on Russia Investigation

Sen. Richard Blumenthal and President Donald Trump

The president's tweets on Monday came during what aides are describing as a 17-day "working vacation" at his golf club in Bedminster, N.J. In an earlier series of tweets, Trump stated that his political base is stronger than ever, despite recent polling to the contrary.

Blumenthal is a frequent critic of the president and was on air Monday morning to discuss the Russian Federation investigation and the "chilling effect" the Justice Department's war on leakers could have on the press.

Trump, who is now working from his golf resort in New Jersey while the White House is under renovation, lambasted the Democrat from CT by bringing up a controversy about Blumenthal's military service in Vietnam.

Trump, like Blumenthal, also received five military deferments during the Vietnam War for bone spurs and never saw any combat. Some even claimed the misleading statements he made were taken out of context.

The impetus for Trump's tweets could have been the fact that Blumenthal appeared on CNN and called Trump's Russian Federation investigation one that "must be pursued", according to Kaitlan Collins, a CNN White House correspondent. "I truly regret offending anyone".

Though Blumenthal conceded in 2010 that he might have misspoken about his service, he was confronted with the controversy this past May when he first raised questions about Comey's firing. "And what you should do is ask Senator Blumenthal about his Vietnam record that didn't exist after years of saying it did", he said. "But I got a number, I think it was 356".

A spokesman for the Selective Service System told the Times that Trump's draft number would have been irrelevant given his medical exemption.

He added that this issue isn't about him, but instead Special Counsel Robert Mueller's "independence and integrity" as he investigates Russia's interference in the election and alleged collusion between the Trump team and Moscow.

The president took three tweets to criticize Blumenthal.

In response, Blumenthal wrote, "Mr. President: Your bullying hasn't worked before and it won't work now". "I believe when the history of this era is written, the heroes will be the free press and the independent judiciary who have upheld the rule of law against threats by the Trump administration".
