Man brandishing knife arrested at Eiffel Tower

Chinese tourists detained in Berlin for Hitler salute

The suspect, wearing a Paris Saint-Germain soccer shirt, was "very quickly overpowered and arrested" by a security guard when he tried to force his way through barriers on Saturday, according to a statement by the Eiffel Tower operating company.

A terror investigation has been launched in Paris after a man with a blade tried to force his way into the Eiffel Tower. The wave of terrorist attacks of the last two years has so far left a total of 239 dead and in recent months the attacks have been directed in particular against security forces. No shots were fired and no one was hurt, a Paris police spokesman said.

A spokesman for the French prosecutor's office confirmed Sunday that an antiterrorist investigation was opened after an interrogation of the suspect, a young Frenchman of Mauritanian origin who, according to preliminary data, professes Islamic extremism.

The suspect told police he wanted to attack a solider and had been in contact with an Islamic State jihadist, the AFP news agency reported.

The official said the claim prompted investigators to upgrade the seriousness of the alleged offense, which originally they classified as a common crime by someone with a history of psychiatric problems.

The man is now under investigation for terrorism offences.

Armed soldiers who are permanently stationed at the Eiffel Tower ordered him to drop his weapon, which he did without attacking anyone, the source said, asking not to be named.
