Anambra Church Attack: Perpetrators Must Be Punished - Saraki

Victims of gunmen attack on Catholic Church

Several worshippers with gunshot wounds were receiving treatment at the hospital, the source said.

Police were at pains to stress this was not a Boko Haram attack in part because the terrorist group has become infamous for its assaults on churches, especially on Sundays and major feast days such as Easter and Christmas.

On his part, Oseloka Obaze, a former Secretary to the Anambra State Government, said such callous attacks dehumanised the society.

Tragedy has struck in Anambra State as scores have been reported killed by gunmen and at least 18 others wounded while worshipping at St. Philips Catholic Church in Ozubulu located in Ekusigo Local Government Area.

One of the Nigerian expatriates had built the St Philip's Catholic Church, Anambra State Police Commissioner Garba Umar said in a statement.

"The man after shooting at his targeted victims still went on a shooting spree, killing and wounding other worshippers, " he said. "I pray that God grants the soul of the departed eternal rest as I urge the security agents to fish out the perpetrators and make them face the law".

He said the attack occurred at about 6:20am on Sunday.

An eyewitness told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday that the gunmen went into the church during the 5:45 a.m. mass and identified a particular man and shot him.

"Such violent incidents dehumanise our society".

The governor said that the attackers who attacked the church opened fire when they perceived that one of the people they are targeting has his vehicle parked outside the church.

"As a political leader, I totally condemn the Ozubulu Church shooting as dastardly, unjustifiable and callous".

He said that after gunmen shot sporadically at worshippers during an early morning mass, many people were injured while some of the victims died on their way to the hospital.

Governor Obiano condemned the attack and promised to ensure that the culprits are brought to justice.
