Trump said phone call with Turnbull was 'ridiculous'

That's what the president told Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in January, according to reproductions of transcripts published by the Washington Post Thursday morning.

The deal to take in 1,250 refugees from Australia's detention centers on Papua New Guinea's Manus Island and the island nation of Nauru was agreed by former President Barack Obama on humanitarian grounds, following intervention from the United Nations.

"You can decide to take 1000 or 100".

In response, the PM said: "You can count on me".

"The obligation is to only go through the process". During the conversation, Trump told Turnbull that the call was his "most unpleasant call" of the day, the transcript said.

"I hate taking these people", Mr Trump said. I will study this dumb deal!

Republican Sens. John McCain and Bob Corker released statements affirming US support for Australia, while McCain phoned Australia's ambassador to stress the importance of the US-Australia alliance. Turnbull turns time and again to the importance of honoring commitments and the good optics of doing so; Trump has trouble understanding Australian policy, doesn't actually listen to what Turnbull says, wanders off course often and seems abjectly uninterested in compromise.

The call bizarrely started with the president asking Mr Turnbull about champion golfer Greg Norman before it quickly devolved into a heated exchange about a USA agreement to accept refugees from Australian detention centres. As far as I am concerned that is enough Malcom [sic].

Mr Trump returned: "This is going to kill me". I am the world's greatest person that does not want to let people into the country.' 'It is important to you and it is embarrassing to me. "I guarantee you they are bad". Trump replies, "I hope so".

Mr Turnbull: "The given number in the agreement is 1250 and it is entirely a matter of your vetting".

Turnbull said the detainees were economic refugees who had not been accused of crimes - explaining that they were barred from entering Australia because of a policy aimed at discouraging human smuggling.

Mr Turnbull: "Thank you for your commitment".

Well, you just heard his spokesman said we had a very cordial conversation.

TRUMP: I do not know what he got out of it. "I will be there again and again".

"I have had it", Trump says.

Trump said his conversation with Russian President Vladimir "was a pleasant call" by comparison.

Newly published transcripts of January phone calls between President Trump and the leaders of Mexico and Australia didn't just give people an opportunity to see how Trump discussed matters with worldwide leaders at the time.

For context, this phone call occurred just one day after Trump signed his original executive order banning refugees from seven Muslim-majority countries for 90 days and banning Syrian refugees indefinitely. "I have been talking about it for a two-year period".

The Washington Post's explosive report also detailed Trump's conversation with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto in which he begged him to stop saying his government would not pay to build a border wall "because I can not live with that". "As opposed to you saying, 'We will not pay, ' and me saying, 'We will not pay'".

In a similar exchange, he told Mr Trump: "You can certainly say that it was not a deal that you would have done, but you are going to stick with it".

"My position has been and will continue to be very firm, saying that Mexico can not pay for the wall", he said.
