NASA is hiring someone to protect Earth from aliens

The Small Magellanic Cloud is a small galaxy about 200,000 light-years way that orbits our own Milky Way spiral galaxy

NASA is willing to pay you six figures for its new "planetary protection officer" gig, where you will be protecting Earth from alien contamination and other secret space things.

The officer's primary responsibilities include overseeing the enforcement of planetary protection policies during NASA's space flight missions, supporting the Safety and Mission Assurance Technical Authority and advising all senior officials on matters pertaining to planetary protection. Pretty well, according to the listing: $124,406 to $187,000.

NASA is accepting applications at USAJobs until August 14, 2017.

The official webpage for NASA's Office of Planetary Protection says its objective is to "promote the responsible exploration of the solar system by implementing and developing efforts that protect the science, explored environments, and the Earth".

Apologies in advance to NASA's human relations department, but those interested in applying can do so here.

Catharine Conley, NASA's current PPO, pointed out that the role, which has a five-year maximum duration, was created to help meet an worldwide agreement that space missions must have a less than 1-in-10,000 chance of contaminating an alien world.

The job involves preventing alien microbes from contaminating the Earth, as well as making sure human explorers do not harm other planets and moons they are trying to explore.

"This new job ad is a result of relocating the position I now hold to the Office of Safety and Mission Assurance, which is an independent technical authority within NASA", Catharine Conley, NASA's only planetary protection officer since 2014, told Business Insider.

So far, the position was occupied by two fearless fellows: one was hired by NASA and one by the European Space Agency. "It's not extremely careful, but it's not extremely lax". The famous U.S government agency posted in the job description that one of their policies is planetary protection.
