Mayor latest victim of Philippine Duterte drugs war

A city mayor and at least 11 others were killed in the Phillipines on Sunday in one of the bloodiest anti-drug assaults so far under President Rodrigo Duterte's crackdown.

Eight people were arrested, including two of Parojinog's children - Ozamiz Vice Mayor Nova Princess Parojinog-Echavez and her brother Reynaldo Parojinog Jr., officials said.

The vice mayor Nova Parojinog and her brother Reynaldo Jr were arrested.

Police on the scene recovered several high-powered firearms and an unspecified amount of methamphetamines, Timoteo Pacleb, chief of police of Northern Mindanao, told reporters.

"Unless something develops later showing that (the Parojinogs) were summarily executed.it's not good that the Senate investigate every police operation", he said.

Since he took office, police have reported killing almost 3,200 people in the drug war.

Espenido figured in yet another controversy after families of slain robbery and gun-for-hire suspects killed in a supposed police operation cried foul after the bodies of the suspects were left in front of Ozamiz City Hall for about 12 hours last July 2.

What happened in between for Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog Sr?

"He's a high-value target on illegal drugs", Espinido said during a press conference.

Roy Blunt (R-MO), a member of the Senate leadership, said he would be " fine " if " skinny repeal " become law. The vote in the wee hours of Friday morning was the final result of a secretive and chaotic process.

President of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte has been in the news for some time for an anti-drug policy that reports say include extrajudicial killings.

In previous interviews, the younger Parojinog said the suspected illegal drugs, firearms and other items found in their homes were all "planted".

However Jeffrey Ocang, an aide to the Parojinogs who are an influential political clan, denied there had been any exchange of gunfire and said the mayor's camp did not fire a shot.

In previous interviews, Parojinog said he had launched his own anti-drug campaign in Ozamiz, even before President Duterte started his war on illegal drugs a year ago.

Speaking to Agence France-Presse, Superintendent Lemuel Gonda said: "Police were serving a search warrant when the security guards of the mayor fired at them, so our policemen retaliated".

"The administration vowed to intensify the drug campaign", Ernesto Abella, presidential spokesperson said, according to AP.

Police say they have killed suspects only in self-defence and deny involvement in a spree of killings of drug users by mysterious vigilantes.

Duterte said he would be "happy to slaughter" three million drug addicts, and likened his campaign to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler's efforts to exterminate Jews in Europe.
