Iranians: US Navy ship fired warning flares in Persian Gulf

The incident took place near an Iranian oil offshore platform on Friday afternoon

The Guards "ignored the unconventional move by the U.S. ships and continued their mission, after which the supercarrier and its warship left the area", the statement added.

The US Navy ships were intercepted by IRGC missile boats near the Resalat gas-oil field, when they approached the Iranians and dispatched a helicopter at 4pm on Friday, according to the statement.

According to the press release, the incident happened Friday afternoon between the aircraft carrier Nimitz and the ships accompanying it with a side and frigates, iranian-equipped missiles of the other. The US navy's Bahrain-based fifth fleet had no immediate comment.

But the Iran state-sponsored IRNA news agency claimed that the US ships acted as the provocateur as they came close to an Iranian oil offshore platform.

"Iranian vessels did not pay attention to the unprofessional and provocative acts and continued to guard in the zone after the United States vessels left", statement of Iran's military leadership said. They said that sending the chopper toward the Iranian ships was "unprofessional" and was ignored by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard.

Some 70% of Venezuelans are opposed to Maduro's plan for a Constituent Assembly, according to polling firm Datanalisis. Highways were mostly empty, and businesses shuttered across the country as millions of people observed the protest.

The vessel belonged to the Revolutionary Guard, the statement said, adding that it stopped its unsafe approach after the warning shots were fired.

In a similar incident on Tuesday, the USS Thunderbolt fired warning shots at Iranian navy boats operating in the Persian Gulf.

Mr Araghchi said the new sanctions are "a breach of the deal in articles 26, 28 and 29".

The articles in question say the USA administration, acting consistently with the respective roles of the president and Congress, will refrain from re-imposing sanctions or any policy specifically meant to directly and adversely affect the normalization of trade and economic relations with Iran. Democrats said the sanctions would not conflict with the nuclear deal.
