Jordanian shot dead, Israeli hurt at Amman embassy

US Ambassador to Israel condemns Halamish attack

The crisis had been triggered by a shooting on Sunday in which an Israeli embassy guard killed two Jordanians after one attacked him with a screwdriver.

A 17-year old teen who was supposed to be delivering furniture to the Israeli Consulate in Amman, Jordan was shot and killed by an Israeli military guard stationed outside, after he allegedly tried to stab the guard with a screwdriver. The metal detectors, along with security cameras, had been installed by Israel after two of their police officers had been shot dead inside the compound on July 14. In clashes with police in several areas of Jerusalem and occupied territories, three young Palestinians were killed.

However, the Israelis refused, saying the guard has diplomatic immunity.

"Jordan took testimony of the Israeli diplomat with the consent of his country before he left for Israel", Ayman Safadi told a news conference held in the Jordanian capital. In the course of the incident, the landlord was also wounded and, later, died of his injuries.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and security authorities are working with the Jordanian government over various channels", the Israeli foreign ministry said. He and the Israeli ambassador were then warmly welcomed by Israel's right-wing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said he was "happy" to see the staffer back in his homeland. Ayman Safadi, Jordan's foreign minister, also joined the chorus of calls for "justice" in the case.

Jordan, the Muslim custodian of the shrine, has played a key role in trying to end the crisis at the holy site, sacred to Muslims and Jews.

Sunday's incident is among the most serious since Israel and Jordan signed a peace treaty in 1994, the BBC reported Monday. The security guard was among the staff who arrived at the Allenby border crossing after reports from Jordan had suggested security officials would prevent his return.

"A weight has been lifted from my heart", he said, according to a statement from the Israeli government. Abbas deserves an entire column of his own detailing his irresponsibility in almost every aspect of this drama, including his continuing dissembling over alleged threats to the Temple Mount status quo and his shockingly irresponsible and risky invitation to the Tanzim militia to lead mass protests this Friday.
