Brexit: EU-UK freedom of movement to end by March 2019

Ford said that “key metrics” in the second quarter were lower due to the effects of Brexit and the launch of the new Fiesta

"I want to reassure all those who have outlined their views. that the Government is listening and that we share their desire to continue to welcome those who help make the United Kingdom such a prosperous place to live".

There were also indications that after Brexit, EU citizens will be subject to similar immigration rules applicable to Indians and other non-EU citizens; such as work permit.

Amber Rudd has commissioned the Migration Advisory Committee to carry out the investigation and pledges that a cliff-edge scenario will be avoided.

Welcoming the move, Adam Marshall, director general of the British Chambers of Commerce, said: "Business communities across the United Kingdom tell us that immigration rules need to be based on an objective look at economic trends and needs, which are better evaluated by the experts on the Migration Advisory Committee than by politicians or commentators".

"The U.K. must remain a hub for worldwide talent", Rudd wrote in the Financial Times newspaper.

Labour lawmaker Ian Murray, a supporter of Open Britain, a group campaigning for the closest possible ties with the European Union, also said the report should have been commissioned as soon as May first took office past year. Some took her comments about interim arrangements to mean that European Union citizens would still be able to come and reside freely in the United Kingdom for a few years after 2019.

The EU's rough estimate is that Britain may owe it around 60 billion euros after it leaves in various legal commitments London has made as a member of the bloc, but talks are to focus on the methodology of calculation rather than the sum itself.

In a letter to the chair of the MAC, Alan Manning, details of which were released by the Home Office, Rudd will say the government is "working towards the goal of achieving sustainable levels of net migration" and that under a future system "we will be able to apply different immigration rules and requirements according to the U.K.'s economic and social needs".

However questions have been raised on why it has taken until now to commission an assessment on one of the central issues of Brexit.

An entirely new immigration system, set by British lawmakers, will be in place in April 2019, a spokesperson said.

This week, "soft Brexit" Cabinet ministers - including Ms Rudd, Chancellor Philip Hammond and Business Secretary Greg Clark - have been strengthening the case to put jobs and the economy ahead of clamping down on immigration in a new trade deal with the EU.

Ed Davey, the party's migration spokesman, said: "Businesses and families need certainty about the future status of their employees and relatives".

"The NHS, businesses and universities that depend on European citizens need answers now, not in another 14 months' time", he said.

It will also consider which sectors are the most reliant on European Union labor and whether there is any evidence that the availability of unskilled labor has led to low United Kingdom investment in certain areas.

EEF added: "Many manufacturers will see today's announcement as a first step, with the government for the first time acknowledging that future migration changes will be implemented in a measured way over a period of years".

Josh Hardie, deputy director of the Confederation of British Industry, said any new system had to protect the benefits of immigration while also restoring public confidence.
