Apple to Pay $506M to the University of Wisconsin in an…

- Unsurprisingly, Apple is appealing the ruling. Now the judge has somewhat thrown the book at Apple, basically doubling the judgement. The university has also filed a patent suit against Apple for its A9 chips as well for infringing on the same patent, that case is still pending. Would not want to give any of those billions of dollars in cash to a university.

Apple today has been ordered by a USA judge to pay $507 million in damages to the University of Wisconsin-Madison's patent licensing arm for patent infringement.

Cruz's 10th-inning single lifts Mariners past Yankees 6-5
It was a vintage performance by Hernandez, all the way down to the lack of run support — a staple of his career with the Mariners. Rookie starter Trevor Williams (4-4) overcame a rough first to pitch 62/3 solid innings for his first win in more than a month.

The infringing products were Apple's A7, A8 and A8X chip processors used in its iPhone 5 and 6 models as well as some iPad devices. The design improves efficiency and performance of a computer processor by predicting user input.

U.S. District Judge William Conley decreed the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) should be awarded an additional $272 million after a jury originally adjudicated $234 million in compensation, according to Reuters. Judge Conley said at the time that Apple could be ordered to pay as much as $862.4 million damages if WARF was able to prove its case. While Apple had initially asked the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to review the validity of the patent, its request was denied. Part of the reason why this never sat well with Apple is because WARF is a non-practicing entity that goes after companies for infringing its patents. Conley said he would not rule in that case until Apple has had an opportunity to appeal the 2015 jury verdict. The judge says that even after the initial judgment, Apple continued to infringe on the patent thus his reasoning for more than doubling the amount owed.
