Farcical UEFA charge Griffiths with 'Provoking' Linfield fans

Explained: Why Celtic, Linfield and Leigh Griffiths individually have been charged by UEFA

Celtic fans" display of "paramiltary' banners during the Champions League match against Linfield has prompted a call for the club to "lance the boil" in respect of fans who celebrate terrorists.

Celtic have been hit with three charges by UEFA for the game against Linfield including the use of illicit banners.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers used the opportunity to hand new signing Olivier Ntcham his competitive debut for the club, with the French midfielder starting in midfield.

Celtic booked their place in the Champions League third qualifying round as expected with a 4-0 trouncing of Linfield at Parkhead to go through 6-0 on aggregate.

Uefa takes a no tolerance policy on political banners, and if construed as such by the governing body Celtic could find themselves in hot water once more.

Celtic, while criticising the behaviour of a "small minority" themselves, have called on other supporters to condemn their actions.

France's Macron urges resumption of Mideast peace talks
French expert on the Palestinian cause Jean-Paul Chagnollaud said that "France's stance is still somewhat vague on the matter". He called for thorough investigation into the recent killing of a Parisian woman believed linked to anti-Jewish sentiment.

"I don't mind that Celtic are a Scottish club who have an affinity with Ireland, but they can not allow their supporters to show an affinity with Irish terrorists, which is what they have been doing".

The incident happened at the end of the 90 minutes, long after the home support had been throwing objects, singing banned songs and in the case of one spectator invading the pitch.

Police in Scotland are preparing for Wednesday's return leg at Celtic Park.

In a statement, Celtic condemned the behaviour leading to the charges.

And at the final whistle, a number of home fans attempted to access the pitch when Griffiths tied a scarf to the goal posts.

UEFA also announced charges against the Scottish champion for players wearing unregulated bibs in the pre-game warm-up and a crowd control issue.
