Charlie Gard Granted Permanent US Residency

Dr Michio Hirano who will be examining Charlie Gard

Last Friday, in the latest hearing over the 11-month-old's future, Mr Justice Francis made it clear it would be illegal for Charlie to travel to the United States without his permission.

The hospital has fought to take Gard off life support since his parents, Chris Gard and Connie Yates, requested to take the baby to the US for nucleoside bypass treatment. The 11-month-old British infant suffers from a mitochondrial disease and brain damage.

Gard and Yates then filed a request with the European Court of Human Rights, an global court based in Strasbourg, France, which has extended the deadline. He previously said he thinks the 11-month-old has a chance of benefiting from the therapy.

Where it doesn't kill it causes permanent brain damage.

It is understood that permanent residency would in effect be similar to Charlie holding dual citizenship, but United Kingdom law still applies.

Great Ormond Street Hospital specialists say that treatment will not work, and the little boy's life support should be turned off.

And Rev. Patrick Mahoney, director of the Christian Defense Coalition, revealed that two companies had offered to cover the travel expenses to have Charlie moved to NY.

The hospital says he is also deaf, has epilepsy and has weakness in the muscles of his eyes meaning his sight will never properly develop. Last Thursday, both parents stormed out of a morning court hearing after Justice Francis alluded to earlier comments by the parents that they would not want to see their son kept alive in his reduced condition indefinitely.

Butler-Cole was appointed to represent Charlie by the publicly-funded state body Cafcass, which is supposed to act in the best interests of children in court cases.

Tragic Charlie was due to be assessed by Dr Michio Hirano, neurologist from the Columbia University Medical Centre, at the London hospital amid his parents' fight for justice. He gets three to four treatments per day, is fed through a feeding tube, is in a motorized wheelchair and needs help moving his limbs.

The drug has not even been tested on mice for Mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome.

"They wish to exhaust all possible options", said Richard Gordon, a lawyer for Charlie and his parents. "They're really strong people", he said. But he added that none of them were in a condition as severe as Charlie's.

Charlie, who is now in a London hospital, can not breathe without the help of a respirator.

Doctors at London's Great Ormond Street Hospital said transferring the baby to a USA hospital would prolong his suffering.

Dr Hirano, the Rome doctor and Miss Yates were all hoping to convince GOSH doctors to let them try the treatment.

Yet, in order for that to happen, the medical staff at Great Ormond must be convinced of the treatment's potential to save baby Charlie.

Mariella Enoc, president of the Vatican hospital, said: "I was contacted by the mother, who is a very determined and decisive person and doesn't want to be stopped by anything".
