GOP Health Care Plan Draws Mixed Reaction From Governors

GOP Senators Continue Work On Revised Health Care Bill

Those changes and others - including a decision to keep a pair of taxes on high-income people and to expand the use of tax-favored health savings accounts - were meant to bridge a vast gap between the Senate's most conservative Republicans, who want less regulation of health insurance, and moderate Republicans concerned about people who would be left uninsured.

Two more Republican senators have defected against the chamber's healthcare bill, leaving the measure without enough votes to move forward-at least for now.

Several others, from both sides of the party's ideological spectrum, expressed misgivings. Sen.

For such patients, "I would be pretty nervous", said Sabrina Corlette, a research professor at Georgetown University's Health Policy Institute. He has 52 GOP senators as part of his majority, and needs 50 of them (Vice President Mike Pence can break a tie) to pass a Republican version of health care, now called the Better Care Reconciliation Act in the Senate. "I have serious concerns about how we continue to provide affordable care to those who have benefited from West Virginia's decision to expand Medicaid". Rob Portman of OH expressed similar concern.

Two other Republican senators, Lindsey Graham of SC and Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, went on television to promote their own alternative plan, just minutes before Senate leaders offered their latest.

The replacement bill's language is based on the repeal bill that that passed by the House and Senate in 2015 but was vetoed by President Barack Obama.

Democrats probed for weaknesses in the Republican ranks.

However, undecided senators like Capito and Indiana Republican Sen. Chuck Schumer of NY, the Democratic leader, said. Why not? The answer is very clear; i.e. the very wealthy and the large corporations are being allowed to pay for lobbyists and for special interest groups that definitely and significantly influence the vote of many elected representatives.

A leading business coalition has warned that employers could pick up the tab if millions of people lose their coverage under the Republican plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act. The resulting mix left neither side completely satisfied. And all of this would happening against a backdrop of deep cuts to Medicaid, as the federal government yanked back the money that's made it possible for 31 states and the District of Columbia to widen eligibility for the program.

The two groups say premiums would "skyrocket" for people with preexisting conditions, especially for middle-income families who don't qualify for the bill's tax credit.

But many in the Trump resistance movement say that while those restrictions are key, the ultimate goal should be not to improve the ACA, which allows Americans to buy health insurance from state-run marketplaces, but to guarantee healthcare for every American with a single-payer or Medicare for All system.

Yes, the Senate bill isn't flawless, but it's the best chance, and perhaps only one, we'll get to undo the damage that Obamacare has caused and make a fresh start. In that particularly lovely insurance company practice, when people experienced a major illness or accident, their insurer would comb through their history to try and find a pretext to kick them off their coverage, just at the moment of their greatest need. House members also held a slew of largely symbolic votes to dismantle the bill - "repeal and replace" became the mantra. "At a time when tax cuts that would seem to benefit the wealthy and increases in other areas of federal spending, such as defense, are being contemplated, placing a "per capita cap" on medical coverage for the poor is unconscionable". It can also repeal or delay the taxes on high-income people, fees imposed on manufacturers. along with exercising taxes.
