Florida beachgoers form 80-person human chain to save drowning family

Beachgoers form human chain to save family of 9 from drowning in Panama City Beach

If you are looking to see some good in the world, The Panama City News Herald has a photo that will give you hope, 80 times over.

Back on the beach, people began to band together to form a human chain to reach the swimmers.

Simmons' husband and other men then began forming a human chain to rescue those who were trapped out in the rip current.

Ursrey's mother suffered a major heart attack during the ordeal and remains hospitalized.

Rosalind Beckton, 38, was at the beach with her 12-year-old son and caught the rescue effort on camera. "I ran back to shore and my husband ran over to them. Boy, do I have a story", she said. The news made Jessica Simmons' heart sink: A group of people got caught in the rip tide.

Two people were transported to Bay Medical Center for treatment after they were rescued.

The Simmonses were confident that they had the stamina and the skill needed to get to the Ursreys.

More Heavy Rain Forecast for Japan as Death Toll Rises to 16
The deadly disaster prompted Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to decide to cut short his European tour and return to Japan. A public official in his 30s said he took a day off from work in Hiroshima Prefecture to help.

Starting with the children, the rescuers towed the swimmers along the human chain and pulled them to shore, the newspaper reported. They say it's a stark change from when the area saw a condominium boom in the past.

Simmons said some of the beachgoers couldn't swim but wanted to help anyway.

"I knew I could get out there and get to them", she told the Panama City News Herald.

And if it wasn't for fast-acting Jessica Simmons and her husband, the Ursrey family probably would've drowned. When a tornado ripped through a neighborhood in Alabama, Jessica Simmons was out in the wreckage with her chainsaw.

"I am so grateful", Ursrey told CBS. "They think it's gentle and they get pulled out a little bit and they panic".

What Simmons found at the end of the human chain, she said, was shocking. Ursey referred to those courageous men and women on the beach that pulled them out as "God's angels".

According to a report in wsfa, Ursrey's mother was rushed to the ICU with an aortic aneurism in her stomach from fighting the current, and is now in Bay Medical Center Sacred Heart in Panama City, recovering. "They were so courageous to get out there and risk their lives to save others", said Beckton, who offered her CPR services on shore.
