UNESCO Declares Hebron a 'World Heritage Site' for Palestinians

Palestinians walk inside Ibrahimi Mosque which Jews call the Jewish Tomb of the Patriarchs in the West Bank city of Hebr

"UNESCO unfortunately succumbed to the manipulations of the Palestinian Authority to politicize holy sites", said Anti Defamation League (ADL) CEO Jonathan A. Greenblatt. They are located over the pre-1967 lines, which means that the Palestinians with the backing of much of the global community claim the sites as part of their future state.

What is the Old City row?

AMMAN: A United Nations agency's designatation of Hebron's Old City in the occupied West Bank as a World Heritage site has been welcomed by Palestinians.

It is under these circumstances that Unesco has ruled that the Hebron shrine a "Palestinian World Heritage Site in Danger".

The prime minister also announced that he would cut an additional $1 million from the funds Israel pays for its United Nations membership, and will instead allocate them to the establishment of a "Jewish Heritage Museum in Kiryat Arba and Hebron", along with other projects in the field. Arab states already submit such triennial resolutions on Jerusalem. "The Jewish people's glorious history in Israel started in Hebron".

Israel seized Hebron, together with the rest of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, during the 1967 Middle East War, and has controlled these territories ever since despite worldwide criticism.

Palestinians have long lived under harsh restrictions in the city, which is one of the starkest symbols of the Israeli occupation.

The ICOMOS assessment on Hebron, published on Sunday, criticized the Palestinian proposal for ignoring Jewish and Christian heritage in the city, "even though extensive remains testify to these links". Israel's army controls access to the Cave of the Patriarchs. Jews could now pray at the Western Wall for the first time in 19 years and at the Tomb of the Patriarch in Hebron for the first time in 701 years.

UNESCO declares West Bank city of Hebron as World Heritage Site in Danger

Israel's far-right education minister, Naftali Bennett, denounced the move and accused the body of being "a political tool, rather than professional organisation".

Adding a site to the list allows the allocation of immediate World Heritage Fund assistance to the endangered property and alerts the global community in the hope it will join efforts to save the endangered sites.

Despite the plethora of religious and historically significant sites in the oPt, the tourism industry accounts for just 6 percent of its GDP, according to the Palestinian Investment Promotion Agency. For Muslims, the city is home to the Ibrahimi mosque, also known the Sanctuary of Abraham, which was built in the 14th century. Israel condemned the text, although it was much softer than similar resolutions passed in previous years.

Then the battle was for physical survival against the Nazis.

Jews have claimed Hebron's Cave of the Patriarchs as the burial site for Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca and Leah.

A picture taken on July 7, 2017 shows Palestinians walking by outside the Ibrahimi Mosque.

This resolution is originally a contentious 2016 resolution that denies any legal or historical Israeli links to Jerusalem. Israel identified a lot of them as attackers. In fact, only the places in which Israel has a presence, like Hebron, there is freedom of religion for everyone.
