Mosul completely liberated from Daesh terrorist group

An Indian foreign ministry spokesman said all possible avenues for locating the missing nationals would be explored now that the city had been liberated by Iraqi forces

The battle for Mosul - by far the largest city to fall under the militants' control - has left large areas in ruins, killed thousands of civilians and displaced almost 1 million people. On Friday, the USA military officially confirmed a total of 603 civilian deaths in the US-led air campaign in Iraq and Syria, although independent research and human rights group estimate the figures to be significantly higher. That summer the group's leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, made his first and only public appearance at the al-Nuri mosque in Mosul's Old City.

The group - whose motto was "remain and expand" - has not conquered new areas around the core of its "caliphate" since 2015, has lost thousands of fighters and is less attractive to foreign jihadists than it once was. Backed by a ferocious aerial bombing campaign by a US -led worldwide coalition, the offensive has turned much of the city to rubble and forced tens of thousands of people to flee.

The fighting also involved fighters of the Kurdish Peshmerga, Shiite militias and Sunni Arab groups. In some of the worst affected areas, nearly no buildings appear to have escaped damage and Mosul's dense construction means the extent of the devastation might be underestimated, United Nations officials said.

In two weeks dozens of surrounding localities are recaptured, including the Christian town of Qaraqosh around 15 kilometres (nine miles) from Mosul. The Iraqi advance began to slow.

The militants control less than a square kilometer (less than a mile) of territory in the shattered city in northern Iraq, but they were using human shields, suicide bombers and snipers in a fight to the death.
