United States to test anti-ballistic missile system amid North Korea tensions

Haley Warns North Korea US Prepared to Use 'Considerable Military Forces' If Necessary

Trump has this week expressed frustration that North Korea's neighbour China has not put more pressure on Pyongyang, notably through trade, to try to rein in its weapons programme. On 4 July, it tested an intercontinental ballistic missile, demonstrating the potential capability to strike Alaska.

USA officials confirmed the statement, saying the device could reach Alaska.

David Finkelstein, director of China studies at Center for Naval Analyses, an Arlington, Va., non-profit think tank, said at the meeting China is facing struggles to re-examine its North Korea policy.

In response to the test-launch, the US and South Korean forces conducted a joint artillery and missile exercise the next day. As it stands now, the rocket that Pyongyang tested on July Fourth can not reach the lower 48 states.

They reached consensus that North Korea's nuclear and missile program is an urgent and grave threat and a complete scrapping of the program should be brought about in a peaceful manner.

How did the Trump administration respond?

En route back to Guam, the B-1Bs flew and integrated with Japanese fighter jets over the East China Sea, US Pacific Air Forces said in a press statement.

USA bombers, jointly with South Korean forces, have conducted rare, live-fire drills near the border with North Korea, according to the South Korean military.

The North has been repeatedly punished by the United Nations Security Council for carrying out rogue nuclear and missile tests.

Russian Federation has said further sanctions will not resolve the issue and on Thursday objected to a UN Security Council condemnation of North Korea's launch because the US-drafted statement labeled it an ICBM, a designation Moscow disagrees with. "Does this guy have anything better to do with his life?"

"It may take longer than I'd like, it may take longer than you'd like", Trump said.

"The era of strategic patience with the North Korean regime has failed - many years it has failed - and, frankly, that patience is over".

He, however, added that these would be buttressed by military capabilities.

President Donald Trump said Thursday he's considering unspecified "pretty severe things" in response to the North's ICBM launch.

North Korea said the missile was a new type of two-stage missile called the Kwasong-14. Trump tweeted about the meeting, but did not give details of the discussion.

While speaking with Xi on Saturday, Trump reminded him that trade "is a very very big issue for the United States" without going into more detail.

North Korean state media described leader Kim as "feasting his eyes" on the ICBM, which was said to be capable of carrying a large nuclear warhead, before its launch. A massive amount of artillery is pointed toward Seoul, home to half of South Korea's population.
