Delta flight returns to Seattle after passenger assaults flight attendant

Delta flight returns to Seattle after assault

The FBI said there's nothing to suggest this was a national security incident. He then allegedly attacked a flight attendant who also intervened.

A Delta spokeswoman denied media reports that the plane was escorted back to Seattle by military jets.

According to an FBI investigator's account, Hudek was served a single beer on the flight and did not appear to be impaired.

Delta flight attendants receive seven to eight weeks of initial training and recurrent training of which a "significant portion" focuses on the safety of passengers and flight attendants, according to a Delta spokesperson.

The suspect, a 23-year-old Florida man, was transferred to federal custody, the FBI's Seattle Field Office said. The rest of the passengers were rebooked on a flight late Thursday night.

Hudek had only one beer on the flight and did not appear intoxicated. Due to security restrictions in place on commercial airliners, it's not easy for a passenger or flight attendant to neutralize someone on a plane who could actually endanger the lives of those on board.

Officials say two people, including the flight attendant, were injured and taken to a hospital.

"They broke two bottles of wine on his head", said the witness, who did not wish to be identified.

Retrained, Hudek kept fighting, the investigator continued.

As the aircraft made the return back to Seattle, the flight attendants and several passengers tried to subdue Hudek. According to the complaint, Hudek was able to move the door handle mechanism and push the emergency release lever halfway. At some point the charged toward an exit door.
