Photo suggests Amelia Earhart might have survived crash landing

A PHOTO has emerged which could prove missing adventurer Amelia Earhart survived her 1937 plane crash before being captured by Japanese forces.

The discovery is featured in an upcoming History channel program - "Amelia Earhart: The Lost Evidence" - that suggests the woman in the photograph is Earhart and the man is Noonan.

Shawn Henry, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation executive assistant director, serves as an expert in the special.

“This absolutely changes history, ” Henry said. According to TMZ, it is said to have been taken on a South Pacific island days after Earhart's disappearance. "I hope we find her some day, but it's not that important to me".

Earhart disappeared over the Pacific Ocean on her attempt to become the first woman to circumnavigate the world. And now, a new documentary claims to have the answer to her troubling fate.

The government's official story, however, is that that her plane ran out of gas and crashed into the Pacific Ocean somewhere near her destination, Howland Island. "Have been unable to reach you by radio". Her remains were never found.

The History investigators also concluded that the woman's body proportions match those of Earhart. The photo would back the theory that the two survived a crash-landing in the Marshall Islands and were held prisoner by the Japanese military on the island of Saipan until their deaths.

The new theory being floated is that Earhart had her navigator, Fred Noonan, were taken prisoner by the Japanese.

Japan's Foreign Ministry, Defense Ministry and National Archives told NBC News they have no documents of Earhart being in their custody.

"It is not clear why the US [government] might want to cover up what happened to Amelia", he says.

During this morning's 7 a.m. 9NEWS morning show, I looked up at the Today Show on one of our multiple TV monitors in the traffic and weather center and saw an image of a Lockheed Electra Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan on the screen. The woman is also wearing trousers, a habit that Earhart was very well known for.

Other independent investigators, such as Les Kinney, who has spent 15 years searching for clues of the Earhart departure, believe that the photo is clear evidence she was "captured by the Japanese".

"The hairline is the most distinctive characteristic", Ken Gibson, a facial recognition expert, pointed out. Some point to similarities between the man's receding hairline and Noonan's actual appearance.
