Red Sox SS Bogaerts (groin) scratched from lineup

ARLINGTON TX- JUNE 19 Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Justin Smoak hits a home run during the MLB game between the Toronto Blue Jays and Texas Rangers

The Red Sox have some great hitters this year.

Bogaerts was scratched from the lineup for Sunday's game against the Blue Jays due to right groin tightness, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reports. He's 2-0 with 24 strikeouts in 15 scoreless innings against the Blue Jays this season, beating them twice north of the border.

"We haven't hit our stride yet", Red Sox bench coach Gary DiSarcina said. "He's been really good here (in Toronto)". But I think he has done a nice job, too, as a starter.

"Nobody's thinking that things aren't going to work out for us". "It says a lot about our guys and our team that we've battled through some things schedule-wise, injury-wise and things like that".

The roster has undergone some changes since Mark Shapiro and Ross Atkins were hired in the front office, but this is still largely a team that was put together by Alex Anthopoulos, the former Jays' GM. The Boston starter worked six innings and allowed five hits and two walks while striking out three. Hanley Ramirez had three hits. In five starts in June, he was 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA. "We want to come out, be optimistic and try and play the way that we know we can". He allowed six hits and two runs in six innings Sunday to win against the Kansas City Royals. Betts then chipped in with a two-run single during an eight-run seventh inning.

"It's huge", Sale said.

"It's huge", he said. Joe Panik singled, and Buster Posey faced a full count when Hudson's pitch got past catcher Elias Diaz, allowing Span to score.

Bet Today's Red Sox vs. Steven Souza had a solo shot for the Rays, who have 23 homers in their past 12 games. Left-hander Chris Sale (10-3, 2.77 ERA) will start for Boston against Toronto Blue Jays left-hander Francisco Liriano (4-3, 5.46 ERA).

A sellout crowd of 46,696 at Rogers Centre enjoyed bright sunshine at the start of the game. "I didn't make pitches when I needed to".

Last-place Toronto has lost seven of nine.

The clock may not be ticking on the Blue Jays quite as fast as a Chris Sale fastball, but it is ticking just the same. Martin also got hit on the foot by Sale in the sixth. He last did it in 2015.

Glenn Sparkman replaced Loup to make his major league debut. Toronto signed worldwide free agent shortstops Miguel Hiraldo and Leonardo Jimenez on Sunday.

Pedroia played his 100th consecutive errorless game at 2B.

With the ugly 11-inning loss to the Red Sox on Friday, the Jays are 3-6 in extra-inning games this season, including 0-2 at home.

"When we get rolling, it's going to be fun to watch", Sale said after a seven-inning, 116-pitch masterpiece for a Boston team that has stormed over the Jays in the first two games of a three-game weekend series to climb to a season-high 11 games over.500. Toronto (37-44) has dropped four in a row and eight of 10 overall.

Red Sox: RHP Eduardo Rodriguez (right knee) threw a bullpen session before the game.

The Blue Jays entered the homestand with optimism that they were close to being in the mix with the contenders in the East. Attendance Saturday at the Rogers Centre on Canada Day was 46,672, the eighth sellout of the season.

With the loss, Toronto fell 9 1/2 games behind the Red Sox in the divisional race.
