Amtrak Picks Former Delta Executive to be New CEO

But Amtrak Chairman of the Board Tony Coscia believes Anderson is up to the challenge.

Anderson is officially joining Amtrak on July 12, a week after Amtrak starts its emergency fix work at Penn Station - which is expected to impact thousands of rush hour commuters.

The CEO of Amtrak is stepping down at the end of the year as the transportation agency has been criticized for the "Summer of Hell" that has caused delays and disruptions of rail traffic along the Northeast Corridor.

That's when Moorman will become an adviser to Amtrak. After a series of infrastructure-related service disruptions in the station - including those caused by two train derailments in 10 days - Amtrak announced plans to take three tracks out of service for most of July and August to renew aging track infrastructure.

On Monday, June 26, 2017, Amtrak named former Delta chairman Richard Anderson as its new president and CEO. Those include the Trump administration's proposal to slash the railroad's federal subsidy, and a rash of track failures at New York's Penn Station that have caused widespread delays and forced a summerlong program of fix work that has angered local politicians. "That's an accomplishment in an industry that's just as hard if not more hard than passenger rail".

Anderson joins Amtrak at a challenging time for the beleaguered intercity passenger railroad, which is largely funded by the federal government.

Richard Anderson, a 25-year veteran of the aviation industry, will assume his post on July 12.

Leading Delta for nine years, Anderson transformed the airline after its exit from bankruptcy into a leader in profitability.

Anderson, who helped bring Delta out of bankruptcy, said in a statement that he was "passionate about building strong businesses that create the best travel experience possible for customers" and called it "an honor to join Amtrak at a time when passenger rail service is growing in importance in America".

Moorman said Anderson, 62, is a "superlative" leader and told Politico that they'll be serving together because, "The one thing he doesn't know is the railroad business, which obviously is my background". He was executive vice president of United Healthcare from 2004 to 2007. He assumed Delta's top job in 2007 and led the company through a merger with Northwest Airlines in 2008.
