Qatar says Saudi-led demands not 'reasonable'

The four Arab states cut ties with Qatar over allegations that it funds terrorism - an accusation Doha rejects but that President Donald Trump has echoed.

Qatar said on Saturday that a 13-point list of demands made by Saudi Arabia and its allies impinged on its sovereignty and failed to meet United States expectations they be "reasonable".

Doha has also been told to shut a Turkish military base in the emirate.

Abu Dhabi: Saudi Arabia and its allies want to resolve their standoff with Qatar through diplomacy and don't seek a regime change, UAE's minister of state for foreign affairs, Anwar Gargash, said at a press conference in Dubai.

Qatar is also required to end all contacts with opposition groups in the four countries - Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Having urged Qatar's neighbours to come up with "reasonable and actionable" demands, the U.S. has sought to distance itself from the crisis.

Sheikh Yusuf Bin Ahmed, the director of the government's Communication Office, said the blockade was meant to "limit Qatar's sovereignty and interfere in its foreign policy", according to the official QNA news agency. "The U.S. secretary of state recently called upon the blockading nations to produce a list of grievances that was "reasonable and actionable.' The British foreign secretary asked that the demands be 'measured and realistic". Qatar was warned by one of its most hawkish critics in the region that unless it meets the list of demands, Doha faces "divorce" from its Gulf neighbours.

The US secretary of state has said some demands on Qatar by its Middle East neighbours "will be very hard to meet".

Turkey has continued to support Qatar throughout the boycott, sending troops to the country, and Iran has sent food supplies.

The demands are apparently aimed at dismantling Qatar's two-decade-old interventionist foreign policy, which has incensed its Arab neighbours. In the other official response out of Qatar, its Human Rights Committee said the demands represented "gross violations" of basic rights.

The rift between the US Gulf allies has been awkward for Washington.
