Annual US Congress baseball game brings unity after shooting

Trump on Scalise’s Condition ‘He’s in some trouble’ Rep. Steve Scalise Louisiana

Scalise was shot Wednesday morning as a gunman sprayed bullets into a GOP congressional baseball practice.

"And as I was getting into the vehicle with one of my colleagues ... there was a guy that walked up to us that was asking whether there was Republicans or Democrats out there", he said during the interview. Democrats gave the trophy to the Republicans, so it could be placedin Rep. Scalise's office as he recovers in the hospital.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said Thursday she favors more money for the U.S. Capitol Police, which is seeking an 8 percent increase to almost $427 million for next year.

The annual charity game, a tradition since 1909, was held this year at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C.

The senior Republican suffered extensive injuries and was in critical condition on Wednesday night, according to the most recent report from the hospital, MedStar Washington. "Trump said by playing the game "you are demonstrating to the world that we will not be intimidated" by threats, or acts of violence".

Ticket sales picked up after Wednesday's shooting, eventually setting an attendance record, the organizers said, as attendees such as Alexander Hilten, 16, of Arlington, Virginia, chose to come to the game for the first time.

Almost 25,000 tickets were sold for the game and it was on track to raise more than $1 million, roughly double what it did past year, organizers said. Ivanka Trump, joined by Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and her two eldest children Arabella and Joseph Kushner, presented a $50,000 check from "Friends in the Trump Administration" to "Congressional Sports for Charity" at the game. It raised over $1 million for charity.

"The members of Congress, the staff and the volunteers who were out at practice this morning care deeply about the causes they play to benefit", game organizers said in a statement released Wednesday.

"I hope he's in good enough shape to watch, because he'll certainly feel good about what he sees", Flake said.

The president's meaning was unclear as he made the comments at an event on Cuba policy in Miami.

Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, said an increase in the Capitol Police budget for fiscal 2018, which begins October 1, is likely to be debated.

They said that his "risk of death" has substantially lowered than when he arrived at the hospital.
