North Korea denies torturing American detainee Otto Warmbier
Though his family said they were told Warmbier had fallen into the coma after contracting botulism and taking a sleeping pill, USA doctors believed that Warmbier had been beaten and suffered massive brain damage.
But it emerged he was in a coma after North Korean officials claimed he had caught botulism, and died on Monday.
They're also calling charges the 22-year-old was beaten into a coma "groundless".
A spokesman for the family said this week that they chose not to disclose his Judaism during negotiations for his release so as not to antagonize North Korea. Through statements on KCNA, North Korea said it dealt with him according to its domestic laws and worldwide standards.
Warmbier however, died on Monday in a US hospital after he was brought back last week in a coma but Pyongyang has said he had contracted botulism.
"Let us state the facts plainly: Otto Warmbier, an American citizen, was murdered by the Kim Jong Un regime", said U.S. Sen.
Although Rodman appeared to believe he played some role in securing Warmbier's release, he maintained his visits to North Korea were not an attempt to carry out a political agenda or negotiate for detainees' release. He was detained for 17 months after being arrested in January 2016 on charges of stealing a propaganda poster from a hotel.
However, both the State Department and Warmbier's father have said the former basketball star had nothing to do with Warmbier's release. He was released a week later.

President Trump has said he is determined to "prevent such tragedies from befalling innocent people at the hands of regimes that do not respect the rule of law or basic human decency".
Warmbier died days after his return to the United States, and his funeral was held Thursday in his hometown of Wyoming, Ohio.
Sick. Warmbier clearly wasn't in a "normal state of health" when he left North Korea.
"Dennis Rodman had nothing to do with Otto", he said.
Chris Volo, Rodman's agent who accompanied the athlete on his trip to North Korea, told ABC News that before they went, "I asked on behalf of Dennis for his release three times". Otto Warmbier. And I said to them, "we... would need his... you know, a release, some type of good faith, if we're ever going to do some type of future sports relations". "Because when I was organizing the trip. and I meet with the delegates here, you know, I addressed". "To see a young man go over there healthy and, [after] a minor act of mischief, come home dead basically ... this goes beyond any kind of understanding of law and order, of humanity, of responsibility toward any human being", he said.
Rodman told ABC News he didn't know Warmbier was in a coma when he heard the news of his release.
