Ex-cop not guilty in Milwaukee shooting death that sparked riots

Dominique Heaggan-Brown right and his attorney Jonathan C. Smith left watch the power point presentation of use of force expert Robert C. Willis on a video screen during the trial of former Milwaukee officer Heaggan Brown Monday

Heaggan-Brown shot Smith in August of 2016 after the officer and his partner stopped Smith on the street, suspecting that he was involved in a drug deal.

Police body camera videos - some of which were not released to the public - were integral to the investigation. "And our argument is that justification did not change over the course of 1.69 seconds between shots".

Jonathan Smith, one of Heaggan-Brown's defense attorneys, told jurors the former officer didn't have the benefit of seeing the events unfold in slow-motion, which is how prosecutors have shown jurors the shooting using still frames from bodycam footage. He was sacked after being accused of the sexual assault of another man.

The shooting sparked two days of rioting in Milwaukee, where protesters burned businesses and a police auto.

The shooting triggered two days of turbulent protests that saw cars and businesses in the city set on fire, and police targeted with gunshots, rocks and bottles. The protesters burned eight businesses and a police vehicle and when it was over, 40 demonstrators had been arrested and a handful of officers hurt.

In the encounter with Smith, Heaggan-Brown and two other officers had approached Smith's rental vehicle because it was parked more than a foot from the curb and they believed a drug deal was about to take place. "It was only one person that took my son's life and that's Heaggan-Brown".

Heaggan-Brown's camera shows him briefly pointing the gun at Smith as he begins the pursuit.

Meanwhile, fans of the Carter family wished the couple on Twitter and also said that they want the photos of the newborn. Bustle has reached out to Beyoncé's and Jay Z's reps for comment, but had not heard back at the time of publication.

Mr. Smith then fell onto the ground. Smith, who was armed with a handgun, ran away from the officers when he saw them exit their squad vehicle.

"Any prosecutor will tell you that self-defense cases are tough cases", Chisholm told a news conference after the verdict.

"Heaggan-Brown fired once at which time he observed the pistol fly out of Smith's hands and over the fence into the backyard of the residence", a criminal complaint states. Four of the jurors are African-American. Smith ran from police, carrying a gun, while the former officer was in pursuit. Ray Tensing's first trial ended last November in a hung jury after some 25 hours of deliberations on the murder and voluntary manslaughter charges.

And all six Baltimore officers charged over the 2015 death of Freddie Gray, due to spinal cord injuries suffered in the back of a police van, were eventually cleared.

This version of the story corrects the date of the Smith shooting to August 13 from August 23.

Heaggan-Brown no longer works with the police department.

Dominique Heaggan-Brown, who is also black, was one of two uniformed police officers on patrol who stopped two men in a vehicle.
