Lawyer: Family seeks justice in police killing

A pregnant Seattle woman has been shot and killed by police officers after she called them to report an attempted burglary at her apartment.

According to the Seattle Times, 30-year-old Charleena Lyles called police on June 18 to report a burglary.

SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle police are investigating the fatal shooting by two officers of a woman family members say was pregnant and struggling with mental health issues.

Lyles had a previous run-in with police after calling them to her apartment, authorities said.

Police say children inside the apartment were not injured.

The recording, captured by microphones linked wirelessly to the dashboard video system in the officers' patrol vehicle, was publicly released in the interest of maintaining "transparency" in the investigation of Sunday's shooting, the Seattle Police Department said.

SEATTLE (AP) - The initial conversation between a pregnant woman and two Seattle police officers seemed polite, professional and calm. Both officers then asked the woman to step back before shooting the woman, according to the transcript.

Both officers have been placed on paid administrative leave.

"It is heartbreaking and unacceptable that Charleena Lyles died at the hands of those she had called on to help her", said Jay Ruderman, president of the Boston-based Ruderman Family Foundation, which advocates for people with disabilities. As a 2016 report from the Ruderman Family Foundation points out, disabled people and people with mental health issues make up half of all those killed by police.

Relatives told the paper that they believe Lyles' race - she was African-American - played a role in the shooting.

"Hey! Get back! Get back!" an officer shouts before gunfire erupts.

In the four-minute audio recording that was released by the police, the officer at the beginning of the audio clip discussed a "safety caution" about her address.

On the audio, the woman can be heard discussing with the officers that there was a break-in.

Lyles' brother, Domico Jones, also speaking to KOMO said, "If worst comes to worst, you could have used a Taser instead of a gun for someone that has three kids inside the house". He said she "was going through some things in her life" but was working hard on improving it. "Get back! Get back!" A person called for help, told the 911 folks that she was experiencing a burglary, or suspected a burglar in her unit, and we see what happened. She was released from jail Wednesday on certain conditions, according to King County jail records.

Seconds later, a commotion is heard. a child cries and Lyles curses at the officers. Both officers opened fire, striking the woman several times.

A court-appointed monitor overseeing use-of-force reforms has found that in responding to roughly 10,000 incidents a year in which people are in behavioral crisis, Seattle officers use force just 2 percent of the time.

Mayor Ed Murray called the shooting of Lyles a tragedy for everyone.

He added that the investigation will be reviewed by the federal monitoring team supervising the city's consent decree. What's not yet clear is whether the officers had the time or physical space to use de-escalation techniques, and whether the presence of children influenced the decision to use deadly force.

"The officers need to pay for what they did", Williams said.
