After he minimized Kovalev, Ward looks for heavier belts

Ward out to make a statement in Kovalev rematch

American champion boxer Andre Ward kept his IBF, WBA and WBO titles by stopping Russian brawler Sergey Kovalev in the eighth round of their light heavyweight rematch on Saturday.

The fight, a scheduled 12-rounder that headlined an HBO pay-per-view telecast in the US, was a rematch of their November 2016 fight, which Ward won by a controversial decision. Ward, who caused a brief pause in the fight in the second round when he hit Kovalev below the belt, was never warned after that by Weeks for low blows.

In a lot of ways it was the same, until Ward - who was knocked down in the first fight - showed he was a big puncher, too, with a right hand that made Kovalev's right leg wobble and signaled the beginning of the end to the bout. "You've got to raise your game to the next level and thankfully that's what we did tonight". And he tagged Kovalev with a flush right to the head that had him wobbly. Referee Tony Weeks had seen enough and stopped it at 2:25 of the eighth.

But Kovalev enjoyed success with his own clubbing right fist in the second round, despite receiving a low blow, and a string of stinging jabs seemed to be troubling Ward in the third.

He continued: "With all the excuse making and all the things he's been saying since the last fight, those are some deeper issues".

Russia Claims to Have Killed ISIS Leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
But US officials stopped short of dismissing the report altogether, because it is hard to disprove such a claim. This information came via a Facebook post from the Russian Defense Ministry today, according to CNBC News .

Fans on social media called the stoppage premature, Kovalev echoed that sentiment in his post-fight comments, but with little energy left Ward would've found a way to stop him in the remaining rounds. I really don't have anything to say on what happened. "I hope the whole world sees what it's like to get in the ring with me". Ward swings a hard left that grazes Kovalev.

As CBS Sports noted, it is expected to be a very close bout again but Ward can again seize the advantage if he dictates the style of the fight.

Many had Kovalev up by 2 or 3 points. The Kovalev throws a low blow. "He's a great fighter", Ward said. Whether the punches that came right before the end of the fight were low or not can be discussed. Between exchanges, Ward used his lead hand to control distance, while on the inside he smothered much of Kovalev's offense.

After the controversy on the scorecards from their first fight, Sergey Kovalev vowed to keep his fortunes out of the three judges seated at ringside on Saturday. Ward came back late in that fight to steal the win. "That one's probably borderline - he was hurt, I went right back there again, he wasn't reacting, right back there again and the referee stopped it".

'I don't think Kovalev complained about it, he was in a submissive position.
