Northern Ireland's DUP wants "sensible Brexit", talks with May to continue

DUP leader Arlene Foster is to meet Theresa May

British Prime Minister Theresa May will try to clinch a deal on Wednesday that would allow her minority government to survive, as European Union leaders voice growing impatience to start Brexit negotiations.

May will meet DUP leader Arlene Foster in London on Tuesday. May's Conservatives in power.

"Bringing stability to the United Kingdom government in and around issues around Brexit, obviously around counter-terrorism, and then doing what's right for Northern Ireland in respect of economic matters".

"I would like to see the DUP change its position, and indeed Northern Ireland as a whole change its position, on LGBTI issues".

"It's a unity of goal, having voted to leave the European Union, that their government gets on with that and makes a success of it". The party won seven seats in last week's election and those MPs travelled to London on Tuesday to claim their offices.

The Democratic Unionist Party controls the Northern Irish Assembly.

The two parties might strike their own deal if Sinn Fein was offered a referendum on a united Ireland. "They are the co-guarantors of the Good Friday Agreement".

"Deal between DUP and government could be delayed until next week because of the aftermath of #grenfelltower and diary commitments of both leaders".

But former Tory PM Sir John Major warned the political price could be even higher, saying it risks destroying the fragile Northern Ireland peace process.

Sinn Fein officials have refused to comment on what their MPs will do.

"However, whilst talks are ongoing, it is important the government gets on with its business and we are confident there will be sufficient support across the House for passing the queen's speech", a Conservative source said.

"Much of it is complete and utter nonsense, I have to say". Free votes on all sorts of issues should be allowed.

May made clear the Brexit negotiations would begin next despite uncertainty.

The political fallout of the fire, which began late at night and trapped dozens of people in their beds, is also hurting May's Conservatives, who run the local council and have been blamed by the opposition for spending cuts that have starved budgets for building maintenance and safety checks. It's not clear what Ms. May and Foster later left through different exits.

Speculation has mounted that an agreement will be hard to reach due to the deal now being negotiated between the DUP and Conservative Party to support the Tory government.
